For whatever reason I try really hard to not modify my system partition. If I could mount it read-only I would. For this reason if I can install something without using my package manager I will.

You need to manage your own
.desktop files obviously but it’s generally worth it for me.
Note: These work in Ubuntu 18.10. I can’t vouch for other distros.
Note 2: I actually switched to installing kitty with apt as it allows me to uninstall gnome-terminal. If apt doesn’t know you have another terminal installed it tries to install xterm when you remove gnome-terminal
